PALM DESERT – For the second straight weekend, the Grand Canyon women's golf team was led by Deanna Salvatori at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate. In the toughest tournament in the Fall this season, the Antelopes finished in 10th place, led by Salvatori with a finish in 16th place.
As a team, GCU shot 926 as a team, putting them at +62 after three rounds. Out of the two teams competing in the tournament from the Western Athletic Conference, the Lopes were 37 strokes ahead of Cal State Bakersfield. Salvatori shot 77 in her first two rounds in California this weekend and to close out the tournament on the final day, Salvatori would shoot 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for 16th place. This is the second straight tournament Salvatori has led GCU with two top-20 finishes.
Amy Ruelas was impressive in her third tournament this fall, tying for 25th place shooting 231 in three rounds. Ruelas continued to improve each and every round as the tournament progressed. Ruelas started the tournament with a round of 79 (+7) and in the second round she cut her round down to two strokes and on the final day Ruelas would shoot a 75 to end the tournament at +3, the same score as her previous tournament at the Washington State Cougar Cup.
Grand Canyon started the tournament with a round of 310 (+22) and after shooting +24 in the second round, the Lopes looked to make improvements and finish a strong note. GCU delivered with a round of 304, shooting a +16 improving by eight strokes from round two to three.
Grand Canyon will be back in action on Oct. 12 at the Pat Lesser Invitational.
