SEDONA, Ariz. – Grand Canyon recorded the third-lowest score on each day of the Red Rocks Invitational, resulting a tie for third place that was led by Lopes freshman
Alexis Vakasiuola's fifth-place finish Sunday at Oakcreek Country Club.
Vakasiuola improved on her Saturday play with an even-par final round at the 6,215-yard course. With Lopes junior
Jess Haines and freshman
Honor Johnson shooting below par Sunday, GCU recorded a 1-over final round to end the 11-team tournament in a third-place tie with Weber State at 9 over. Host Northern Arizona won at 10 under, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Gonzaga.
Boosted by her 6-under first round, Vakasiuola landed at 3 under for the weekend and earned a top-six finish for the fourth time in GCU's past five tournaments. The San Tan Valley native tied for the Red Rocks Invitational's best score on par-5 holes at 5 under and also was 1 under on par-3 holes.
Haines stormed up the leaderboard this weekend, rallying from a 5-over opening round by shooting below par Saturday and Sunday. Haines eagled the par-5, 490-yard sixth hole Sunday and closed with an 18th-hole birdie for a team-best round of 2 under.
That put the native of England in an 11th-place tie for the tournament.
Johnson, her fellow English golfer, delivered a below-par round for the second consecutive tournament by firing a 1-under final round. Johnson dropped four birdies on the back nine after making seven consecutive pars on the front nine.
GCU freshman Rose Maguire and
Clara Duerr could not help the team score as individual entries, but the duo tied for 18th place at 6 over for the Lopes' next-best individual entries.
The Lopes' Sunday team scoring was rounded out by senior
Lena Tremouille, who shot 4 over to land in 22nd place at 8 over.
GCU sophomore
Allie Justiz tied for 30th after a final round of 5 over while sophomore
Matilda Samervong, an individual entry, was 49th at 20 over.
The Lopes' next tournament will be close to campus in the West Valley, where the Bell Bank Pay It Forward Invitational will be played at Wigwam Golf Course in Litchfield Park, Arizona.
