KAUAI, Hawaii – Grand Canyon women's golf showcased what it meant to never settle or give up.
Three days on the island of Kauai in Lihue, GCU shot 33 over in round one for a 11th place showing after Monday. The result after Wednesday's third and final round was a 17 over card and 16 under total over the final two rounds of action at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Ocean Course Hokuala.
The Lopes placed seventh of 14 schools, only six shots back of a top five placement. Their resilient play saw a 6 under second round and 10 under final round, the second-best single round score of the tournament.
BYU won at 6 under, the only under par team in the field. Long Beach State placed second at 2 over followed by Kansas State at 4 over.
The Lopes had eight birdies total in round one to 12 birdies on the front nine in round three. That birdie spree was led by junior
Allie Justiz, who tied for 42nd at 10 over. While not finishing the best for the squad, her tremendous final round saw eight birdies to just one bogey for a 7 under, 65, tied with six other Lopes for lowest single round score in program history.
"I am so proud of Allie today," said head coach
Brent Nicoson. "I walked the entire round with her and she played amazing golf. It was so fun to see her mature during this event and not give in after two tough rounds."
Sophomore
Alexis Vakasiuola was the last player to shoot 65, doing so at the GCU Invitational last spring. Justiz's final round moved her up 21 spots in the player standings and tied for the lowest single score in the tournament. Her record watch day began with four birdies over the course of the first seven holes and ended the round with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to put her name in GCU lore.
"I didn't think too much of it, but starting with four birdies early on felt 'normal'", Justiz said. "I told myself to just keep pushing, be better than how I started, and I credit that to my putting. It felt easy today, visualizing every line and reading everything perfectly."
The 7 under score also tied for best low round vs. par, aiding GCU to a 278 final round, which tied for sixth lowest single round team score in program history.
Vakasiuola made a move to a top 20 placement after Wednesday's final round, shooting 2 under in round three for a 4 over total. She jumped 12 spots to tie for 19th and has placed in the top 20 in every tournament this season.
Freshman
Gianna Singh and sophomore Clara Dürr each shot 5 over, tying for 27th. Singh had 10 birdies between rounds two and three, going 82-69-70. Dürr's 77 was the bright spot in round one for GCU, who then shot 1 under, 71 in round two.
Sophomore
Rosie Maguire shot 11 over to tie for 46th, while senior
Jess Haines tied for 58th (17 over) as an individualist.
"I am really proud of our team for bouncing back from an extremely tough first round," Nicoson said. "We were 16 under and the lowest combined score in the final two rounds after a very off first day where we counted some big numbers and made too many unforced errors."
The Lopes' 47 birdies were third best among the field. They also finished top five in both par 3 and 4 scoring.
"We knew after the first round it wasn't us," Justiz said. "Coach helped us have a better mindset going into rounds two and three. He truly believes in us, both him and Coach C [Carroll]. That belief in us and specifically me gives me the mindset I can play to the best of my ability. Honestly, I went into this final round thinking 'I want to try and break the course record' and sure enough, it was nearly there."
GCU concludes the fall slate Monday, Oct. 26-27 in Miami, Florida, in the Pat Bradley Invitational at Miami Lakes Golf Club.
