GCU's Vakasiuola rises to top-20 finish in season opener
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Grand Canyon sophomore Alexis Vakasiuola climbed to a top-20 finish to start the Lopes' season at Chambers Bay Golf Club in the Pacific Northwest, finishing the Leadership and Design Invitational tied for 17th place Tuesday.
The tournament was the first of three straight in the Evergreen State for the Lopes, who are traveling to Spokane next week and Tacoma on Oct. 5-6.
Vakasiuola, the reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Year, finished her final round with eight birdies and a 1-under, 71, to tie 17th place. The Arizona native bounced back from a 5-over first round with an even-par second second round and a 1-under third round, going 4 over for the tournament. Her 1-under total Tuesday tied for the day's sixth-lowest round, and she had the fifth-most birdies (12) among 92 players.
Sophomore teammate Clara Dürr placed next highest for GCU, shooting 1 over Tuesday for a 14-over total. She tied for 49th and had four birdies over her final 18 holes.
Senior captain Jess Haines (tied for 75th) and freshman Allira Shingles (88th) completed the starting four for the Lopes. Junior Allie Justiz began the tournament and shot 1 over in the first round before withdrawing for injury.
The Lopes, who placed 17th overall, will begin play in The Kalispel Invitational, hosted by Gonzaga, on Monday.
