GCU finishes 2nd out of 14 schools in Spokane
SPOKANE, Wash. – Grand Canyon women's golf rebounded from its first Washington tournament with a second-place showing at the Kalispel Invitational at Kalispel Golf and Country Club on Tuesday, totaling four top-25 finishers and the field's best third-round score.
In its second of three straight events in the Evergreen State, GCU carded an 11-over-par total, two strokes ahead of Mountain West opponent Fresno State in third. Boise State won the 14-team tournament at 3 under par.
Leading the Lopes was sophomore Rosie Maguire, who competed in her first tournament of the 2026-27 season. The Scotland native shot 71/75/70 with nine birdies, three of which came in her final round after a 2-under 70 with only one bogey and 14 pars.
Maguire finished at even par to tie for fifth place, the best finish this season by a Lope.
"I am really proud of the grit the ladies showed after we got off to a tough start in the first round," GCU head coach Brent Nicoson said. "I'm so happy for Rosie as she has been working so hard since arriving to GCU last fall. She is a great young lady who does things the right way and the process of maturing and getting better as a player is starting to show. We needed someone to step up and lead us this week and it was Rosie who did that. This will be a great confidence boost for her."
The Lopes duo of senior Jess Haines and sophomore Alexis Vakasiuola tied for 15th at 4 over. Haines carded a 1-under final round, tallying four birdies to just one bogey Tuesday. After a first-round 77, Vakasiuola rebounded with rounds of 71 (1 under) and 72 (even) with seven birdies in that span.
Vakasiuola has finished in the top 15 of both GCU tournaments to open this season.
Competing in her second straight tournament, Lopes sophomore Clara Dürr shot even par in Tuesday's final round and tied for 23rd at 7 over. Dürr had eight birdies in total, six of which came on the back nine. It was her personal-best finish as a member of the Lopes.
GCU freshman Gianna Singh tied for 32nd at 9 over in her first collegiate tournament, while classmate Allira Shingles tied for 53rd (15 over) as an individual entry.
A tough playing course, the Lopes averaged 4.11 on par-4 holes (third best) and 5.04 on par-5 holes (tied for 2nd best). The team's 43 birdies tied with Boise State for most in the field, while the 53 bogeys were third fewest.
GCU takes a week off before returning to action Oct. 5-6 in the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma, Washington.
