MARICOPA, Ariz. – A pair of 4-over-par rounds put Grand Canyon in prime position Tuesday for a potential top-three showing at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa.
LEADERBOARD
GCU heads into Wednesday's final round at 8 over par, holding sixth place out of 20 teams in a field that includes seven Mountain West programs.
The Lopes are two strokes back of fifth-place UNLV, which leads the Mountain West field. No. 22 Iowa State, the field's only ranked team, holds the top spot at 13 under.
GCU freshman
Alexis Vakasiuola is in sixth place at 4 under, notching eight birdies and an eagle over Tuesday's two rounds. Vakasiuola tallied six of her birdies in the second round with four coming on her final six holes.
Junior teammate
Jess Haines is at even par, second best on the squad and 12th out of 116 golfers. Haines made three birdies to just one bogey in her first round and recorded 16 pars in the second round, tied her for the second-most pars (30) in the tournament.
GCU junior
Lena Tremouille had a team-high nine birdies and totaled a 2-under second round, finishing 29th at 3 over. Her birdie count is tied for seventh.
Lopes sophomore
Allie Justiz is 80th at 11 over par, while freshman teammate
Honor Johnson is 84th at 12 over.
GCU freshman
Rosie Maguire is 93rd (14 over) as an individual entry.
The squad has 29 birdies, fourth most in the field, and holds a 3.08 average on par-3 holes, also fourth best.
The third and final round begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
