Both Grand Canyon tennis teams will be in action this week in the biggest fall tournament at the annual ITA Southwest Regional.
Â
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association brings together the best regional players each October in a nationwide showcase. The men will travel to Pepperdine while the women will head to San Diego for the four-day event.
Â
Both teams will compete in a 128-player singles draw with those players also pairing up for a 64-team doubles draw.
Â
The men are coming off their first fall tournament in September at the Wildcat Invitational. In Tucson, the Lopes finished with a combined seven wins in singles and doubles. GCU'sÂ
Wyatt Anderson, a junior, and
Ntal Richards, a freshman, won in the top singles flight.
Â
Eight Lopes will be in action in the singles draw this week. In doubles, GCU freshmen
David Wekesa and
Mattia Ghedin will match up with the No. 1 overall seed if they defeat their first-round matchup against a pair from UC Irvine.
Â
The women are coming off a strong performance at the Beach Tennis Tournament in Long Beach, California, earlier this month. As a team, the Lopes won 12 singles matches and
Natasha Puehse provided the exclamation point with a singles flight win.
Â
This week, the Lopes will see many familiar faces from their first fall event hosted by Long Beach State. All seven Lopes will compete in singles while Puehse and
Santa Strombacha, who won a doubles consolation bracket earlier this fall, will face off against a pair from Hawaii in the first round.
