Grand Canyon secured a 4-3 victory over New Mexico on Sunday to extend its winning streak to 14 matches at GCU Tennis Facility.
Â
In doubles play the Lopes fell on Courts 1 and 3, giving the doubles point to the Lobos.
GCU junior
Charlie Pade was the first to give the Lopes some momentum, getting his win on Court 6. That brought the Australian to 10-0 on the season in singles play.
Â
Tyler Waddock of New Mexico defeated GCU junior
Brice Patoux on Court 5, giving Patoux only his third loss of the season and putting the Lobos ahead 2-1.
Â
New Mexico and GCU continued to trade blows as Lopes sophomore
Tristan Berard secured another point, winning 6-3, 6-4 to make the team score 2-2. After a loss on Court 3, New Mexico was within a point of clinching the win.
Â
Lopes sophomore
Andreas Loizas came up clutch with the match's tying point, defeating Philip Bosin 7-6, 6-2.
Â
With the team score tied at 3-3, the match came down to Court 4, where GCU sophomore
Daniel Jankoski entered his match undefeated on the season.
Â
After losing 7-5 in the first set, Jankoski came back to take the last two sets with a tiebreaker win in the third set.
Â
"During the tiebreaker, I was just telling myself that all I need is seven points and I win," Jankoski said. "The boys all got me through it.
Â
"The main thing I have been focusing on is my mental game and making sure that I am staying positive."
The Lopes look to stay undefeated on their home courts this week as they play Air Force at 12 p.m. and Arizona Christian at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
