Grand Canyon suffered its first home loss of the season Wednesday in a tightly contested 4-3 decision to Air Force at GCU Tennis Facility, where the final singles match ended with a tiebreaker. GCU finished the day with a 6-1 victory against Arizona Christian.
Air Force defeats GCU 4-3
The Lopes battled back against the Falcons after dropping the doubles point, winning three of the six singles matches but Air Force followed up Court 2 and 6 victories with the clincher on Court 1.
GCU fell behind when Air Force claimed the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. The Falcons carried that momentum into singles, but the Lopes responded with strong performances in the middle of the lineup.
Junior
Brice Patoux got the singles scoring started for the Lopes on Court 5, defeating Alec Fritzinger 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker), 6-2.
Sophomore
Diordan Macababbad picked up his second GCU win on Court 3 before Air Forced evened the match at 2-2 with Matthew Staton giving Lopes junior
Charlie Pade his first loss of the season.
GCU sophomore
Daniel Jankoski, who has the third-most wins on the team, picked up another win to bring the Lopes within one point of winning the dual match when he defeated Langdon Tingleaf 7-5, 6-4.
With GCU leading 3-2, Air Force captured Court 2 to put the dual at 3-3 with Court 1 still going.
The Lopes lost a heartbreaker on Court 1, where all three sets went to a tiebreaker with AJ Moore taking the last two to beat GCU sophomore
Tristan Berard.
GCU defeats Arizona Christian 6-1
The Lopes were able to finish the last home match of the season on a strong note, defeating Arizona Christian in a decisive 6-1 victory with a new lineup.
The match started with GCU securing the doubles point. On Court 3, Pade and Patoux ran away with a 6-1 victory before Berard and Jankoski sealed the deal on Court 1, winning 6-3.
Freshman
Heremana Courte, who has only appeared in four matches for the Lopes, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win on Court 6 against Adrian Smith.
Macababbad, Jankoski and Patoux picked up dominant wins to clinch the dual match for the Lopes. These three wins completed more than 39 wins on the season for that trio.
With the match already won, sophomore
Andreas Loizas finished the job on Court 1, where a 10-4, third-set tiebreaker decided the match.
The Lopes wrap up their season on a three-game road stretch before heading to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Championship.
