Macabbad, Apostol each post 3-1 singles records over 3-day event

Grand Canyon men's tennis sent four Lopes to the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, California, where junior Diordan Macabbad and sophomore Calin Apostol each posted three singles victories while GCU found consistent success in doubles throughout the three-day event.

GCU opened Friday against California with a sweep of two doubles matches. Lopes junior Charlie Pade and Apostol rolled to a 4-0 win against Leo Cattaneo and Melchoir Delloye, while GCU sophomore
Heremana Courte and Macabbad edged Winston Lee and Andrea Meduri 4-3.

Cal answered by taking all four singles matches, although Pade and Courte each pushed their opponents to match tiebreakers. Pade won his opening set against Meduri before falling 4-6, 6-1, 10-6, while Courte took the first set against Cattaneo before a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 defeat.

The Lopes bounced back in their second Friday session against Loyola Marymount by winning three of four singles contests. Pade defeated Cesar Cruz 7-5, 7-5, Macabbad topped Hoan Mouret 6-3, 7-5, and Apostol earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Denis Maijorov. Courte took Emil Kindhult to three sets before falling 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.

GCU advanced to Saturday's Bronze Draw semifinal, where it put together its strongest all-around session of the weekend against players from Pepperdine and Cal Lutheran.

Pade and Apostol opened with a 6-1 doubles victory against Pepperdine's Photos Photiades and Will Steinberg. Courte and Macabbad followed with a 6-4 win against Cal Lutheran's Louis Bocquet and Toki Adachi.

The Lopes carried the momentum into singles with wins in three of four matches. Macabbad cruised past Steinberg 6-1, 6-2, Courte defeated Bocquet 6-1, 6-4, and Apostol pulled away from Adachi for a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Pade battled
Photiades through three sets before falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

GCU closed the tournament Sunday in the Bronze Draw final, beginning with another win from Pade and Apostol. The Lopes duo edged UCLA's Cassius Chinlund and Leo Von Bismarck 4-3 (6).

Macabbad completed his 3-1 singles weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against UCLA's Von Bismarck. Apostol also moved to 3-1 in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Cal Poly's Leo Matthysen. Pade fell to Chinlund 6-0, 6-1, while Courte dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Benjamin Berger.

GCU finished the weekend with eight singles victories and five wins in seven listed doubles matches. Pade and Apostol combined for a 3-1 doubles record, while Courte and Macabbad went 2-1 in their three listed matches together.
