LAS VEGAS, Nev. - No. 5 seed Grand Canyon's postseason run came to an end Friday with a 4-2 loss to top-seeded San Diego State in the Mountain West Championship at Darling Tennis Center.
GCU opened strong by claiming the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3.
Gala Arangio and
Karina Hofbauer earned a 6-3 victory, while
Hams Metwally and Amalia Suciu followed with another 6-3 win to give the Lopes a 1-0 lead.
San Diego State responded in singles, taking the first completed match at No. 1 before
Hams Metwally pushed GCU back in front with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win at No. 4.
The Aztecs then took control with three consecutive victories, including a three-set battle at No. 5 and another at No. 6, to clinch the dual.
Several courts were tightly contested throughout, including a back-and-forth match at Court 3 from junior
Gala Arangio.
The Lopes also battled on Courts 5 and 6 with senior Dani Deaifi just losing in a three-set match. Freshman Amalia Suciu battled on court 6 as well, losing in a back and forth three set thriller.
With the loss to the No. 1 Aztecs, GCU concludes the season after a strong run through the Mountain West Championship.
With a schedule filled with ranked opponents, the Lopes were able to finish on a strong point. In just her second season with the Lopes, GCU head coach Dane Vorster has the program on the rise as they will continue to battle in the Mountain West.
The Lopes finished the season 15-12 and tied the program record for highest ITA ranking.
The year included three players securing 10 or more wins as well through the year. With only one senior graduating the Lopes look to build off the momentum of their inaugural year in the Mountain West
