LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon women's tennis opens its first Mountain West Championship on Wednesday as the No. 5 seed against No. 12 seed Fresno State with four wins needed this week to claim a team title Saturday.
GCU is looking for the unique chance of being conference champions four seasons in a row. Lopes head coach Dané Vorster is looking for her second conference title in her second season at the helm.
The Lopes enter the postseason in their first year as a Mountain West member, positioning themselves in the middle of a competitive conference race. With the Lopes finishing 13-11, they went 6-5 in conference play.
In its first meeting with Fresno State, GCU cruised to a 4-1 home victory in March. The winner of Wednesday's first-round match will advance to play No. 4 seed Air Force in a Thursday quarterfinal.
The Mountain West Championship continues through Saturday, when the 11 a.m. title dual will be staged at UNLV's Darling Tennis Center. All matches will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
