LAS VEGAS — No. 5 seed Grand Canyon opened Mountain West Championship play with a dominant 5-0 sweep of No. 12 seed Fresno State on Wednesday at Darling Tennis Center.
GCU set the tone early by claiming the doubles point with convincing wins on Courts 1 and 2.
Lopes sophomore
Bella Crossman and senior
Dania Deaifi secured a 6-3 victory at the top spot, while GCU junior
Gala Arangio and sophomore
Karina Hofbauer followed with a 6-4 win to give the Lopes a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
That momentum carried over to four consecutive completed courts that GCU won in straight sets to clinch the first-round dual match.
Crossman extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at Court 1 while Deaifi added a 6-2, 6-2 victory on Court 5.
Arangio and Hofbauer followed with decisive wins at Court 2 and 3, respectively, to seal the shutout.
Two additional matches were left unfinished once the dual was decided, with freshman
Hams Metwally leading on Court 4 and Amalia Suciu ahead on Court 6.
The Lopes' efficient performance advanced them to the conference quarterfinals in Las Vegas, where they will match up against No. 4 seed Air Force at 2 p.m. Thursday as they look to book their spot in the semifinals.
