LAS VEGAS, Nev. - No. 5 seed Grand Canyon advanced in the Mountain West Championship with a 4-0 sweep of No. 4 seed Air Force on Thursday afternoon at Darling Tennis Center.
GCU set the tone early by securing the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 2. Sophomore
Bella Crossman and senior
Dania Deaifi opened with a 6-4 victory at the top spot.
This was followed by junior
Gala Arangio and sophomore
Karina Hofbauer earning a 6-4 win at Court 2 to give the Lopes a 1-0 lead.
The Lopes carried that momentum into singles play, taking the first three completed courts to clinch the match.
Arangio struck first quickly with a 6-2, 6-2 win at Court 3 and
Karina Hofbauer followed with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory at Court 2. Â
Hams Metwally then sealed the dual with her first clinch in her career with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 comeback win on Court 4.
Three additional matches were left unfinished once the clinch was secured, including competitive battles at the top and bottom of the lineup.
The Lopes' sweep sends them forward in the Mountain West Championship as they will face No.1 San Diego State tomorrow in the semifinals as they look to punch their ticket to the Championship match.
