MALIBU, Calif.— Both Grand Canyon tennis teams were well represented at the Oracle ITA Masters over the weekend at Pepperdine. Seniors
Lorenzo Fucile and
Emilia Occhipinti each competed in individual singles draws and together in a mixed doubles draw.
Fucile, in his second year at the event, was seeded at No. 17 in the 32-player singles draw and faced No. 16 Nicaise Muamba of Liberty in the first round. In a back-and-forth match Fucile was won both sets in tiebreakers 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (9-7) to advance to the second round.
In the round of 16, Fucile faced No. 1 overall seed Keegan Smith of UCLA. In a rematch of their first-round meeting in the NCAA tournament in May, Smith defeated Fucile 6-3, 6-1.
Occhipinti was seeded at No. 29 in singles and drew a tough first-round matchup against No. 4 seed Katarina Jokic of Georgia. Jokic began this season as the top-ranked singles player in the country by the ITA, but Occhipinti played well despite the 6-4, 6-3 loss.
Occhipinti continued in the consolation draw but fell 6-4, 6-0 to No. 20 Kalani Soli of Liberty.
In mixed doubles, the two GCU Italians paired as the No. 28 seed and faced a Big 12 pairing of Matias Soto of Baylor and Anna Turati of Texas. The Lopes fell 6-4 to Soto and Turati, who advanced to the quarterfinals.
