The Grand Canyon tennis teams will be well represented at the Oracle ITA Masters with seniors
Lorenzo Fucile and
Emilia Occhipinti participating in this week's event.
The annual fall tournament brings together the top men's and women's player from each of the 32 Division I conferences. Running from Thursday to Sunday, Fucile and Occhipinti will represent GCU and the WAC in the 32- player singles draws and a 32-pair mixed doubles draw.
Fucile became the first Lope to compete at the ITA Masters last season. The senior from Messina, Italy, was the No. 19 seed in singles and dropped the first match to the Big South Player of the Year, Henry Patten of North Carolina-Asheville. Fucile rebounded with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alabama State's Ion Efrim in the consolation bracket.
In mixed doubles, Fucile partnered with Dominique Vasile of Quinnipiac. The pair dropped its first match 6-2 to the No. 4 seed, Aleks Kovacevic of Illinois and Giulia Pairone of Michigan.
This will be the first fall event for Fucile and Occhipinti. The rest of the men's team competed at the Wildcat Invitational last week in Tucson, while the remainder of the women's team will play this weekend at the SDSU Fall Classic at San Diego State.
