The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s tennis teams each collected wins to close out their road trip in Pensacola, Fla.
The men, ranked No. 17 in the nation, defeated No. 11 Ouachita Baptist, 6-3.
“The guys saved their best for last, beating the 11th-ranked team in the country,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “The team showed much heart winning four out of four three set matches to come from behind after doubles for the win.
Patrice Giraldi was down a set and 2-4 but was able to turn his match around to clinch the fifth point.
Ahmad Saleem was also able to come from a set behind to win.
Frederic Schoelzel and
Stephane Murray added to our three set wins after dropping the second set. This was a perfect way to finish the road trip and to get ready for the nationals next month that we are hopeful to get the bid for.”
The men’s matches were highlighted by
Peter Kazianschuetz’s 13th-straight singles victory. He recorded a 6-2, 7-5 win today at No. 4 singles. Schoelzel, ranked 26th in D-II, defeated 25th-ranked Marko Boskovic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
The win closes out the regular season for the men with an overall record of 11-7.
The 13th-ranked GCU women swept West Georgia, 9-0. The Antelopes lost only one game in the nine-contested matches and improved their overall record to 12-7.
“The women were able to make quick work with West Georgia today after their six-hour match last night,” said Prudhomme. “They did a great job bouncing back and finishing the trip with a winning record along with the men.”
Priscilla Annoual highlighted the women’s day with her fifth-straight win, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Justine Majan picked up her team-best 17th win of the season with her 6-0, 6-0 blanking at No. 3 singles.
The women return to action with a match at Dominican on April 18 in San Francisco, Calif. The Women’s PacWest Tournament will be contested from April 19-21 in San Francisco.
