The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team closed out their regular season with an 8-1 win over Dominican in Kentfield, Calif. today.
“The girls played well in their final match before the conference tournament,” said head coach Greg Prudhomme. “Getting a good win was a perfect lead in for starting on the right foot here in the Bay Area and should help us in our first match against Hilo.”
GCU, ranked No. 3 in the West Region and No. 13 in the nation, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a sweep in doubles.
Priscilla Annoual cruised to a 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles.
Justine Majan swept to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 3 slot, followed by straight set wins by
Frederique Van de Velde at No.4 singles and
Franziska Schmid at No. 5 singles.
The Antelopes closed out their regular season with a 13-7 overall record, while improving to 4-5 away from Paseo Racquet Center.
Grand Canyon will be back in action tomorrow for day one of the Pacific West Conference Championships at the Marlin Tennis Club in San Rafael, Calif. GCU will enter the championships with the No. 3 seed and will open against No. 6 Hawai’i Hilo. The ‘Lopes defeated Hilo, 8-1, on Feb. 9 in Phoenix. BYU-Hawai’i is the No. 1 seed, with Hawai’i Pacific coming in at No. 2.
