The Grand Canyon University women’s tennis team advanced to the PacWest Championship semifinals with a 5-1 victory over Hawai’i Hilo today at the Marlin Tennis Club in San Rafael, Calif.
The win improved the 13
th-ranked Antelopes’ overall record to 14-7.
GCU jumped out to a 2-1 after the doubles round with victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots.
Priscilla Annoual teamed with
Kaila Knopf to win 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Justine Majan and
Cecilia Vergnet won 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles match to give GCU the lead heading into the singles competition.
Majan and Vergnet completed their strong day of play, winning in straight sets at the No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Majan won 6-1, 6-0, while Vergnet won her match 6-0, 6-0.
Frederique Van de Velde took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to wrap up the contest.
Grand Canyon, the No. 3 seed in the championship, will next face No. 2 seed Hawai’i Pacific, tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in San Rafael. HPU defeated the Antelopes, 7-2, in their meeting on March 13 in Las Vegas, Nev. HPU defeated GCU in the PacWest semifinals last season and also knocked them out in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
