ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Grand Canyon's first tournament is complete under first-year head coach
Brent Nicoson, and the Lopes left the UNM Championship Course on Tuesday with quality rounds and a top-five finish.
GCU placed fifth out of 15 teams at the Dick McGuire Invitational, carding a team score of 16 over par. It finished four strokes back of CSU Fullerton but distanced itself from sixth place and on, finishing nine strokes better than sixth-place BYU.
The 6,354-yard, par 72 UNM Championship Course saw only two teams finish even par or better in the third and final round. GCU tallied 37 birdies over the course of three rounds, which ranked sixth among the field while finishing 6 under on par-5 holes, which was third.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt made her GCU debut by tying for seventh place with an even scorecard. The Cactus Shadows High School alumnus shot 1 over Tuesday with three birdies, putting her total birdie count at 11, which tied for sixth in the field. Rosholt was exceptional on par-5 holes, going 3 under par on such holes throughout the two-day tournament. She was one of 10 players to shoot 3 under or better on par-5 holes.
San Tan Valley native
Alyzzah Vakasiuola completed her first tournament as a Lope and tied for 19th place at 6 over, joining sophomore
Brenna Preap in the same position. Vakasiuola shot 2 over in Tuesday's final round and notched eight birdies over two days. While Preap shot 7 over Tuesday, her nine birdies in the tournament were second most on the team and made her one of two GCU players with an under-par round (1-under first round).
GCU senior
Anci Dy tied for 34th at 10 over, recording six birdies in three rounds. Sophomore teammate
Jess Haines tied for 60th at 15 over. Dy shot an even-par first round and finished Tuesday at 4 over, while Haines had her best round Tuesday at 1 over with 15 pars and a birdie on her final 16 holes.
GCU returns to action in less than a week when it travels to University Place, Washington, to partake in the Leadership and Golf Invitational at Chambers Bay. The first and second rounds begin Monday with the final round on Tuesday.
