LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The saying, "It's not about how you start, but how you finish," can aptly describe Grand Canyon's first and second round of the Bell Bank Pay It Forward Collegiate on Monday at Wigwam Golf Club.
LEADERBOARD
GCU shot 10 over par through its first 18 holes before storming back with an 8-under second round – the third lowest of any team in that round – to sit in seventh place and within striking distance of a top-five showing.
The Lopes are 2 over as a team through 36 holes with Montana State leading the 14-team field at 19 under. GCU trails sixth-place UC Irvine by a stroke and fifth-place Middle Tennessee by five strokes.
GCU's first round of 10 over had it in 10th place despite making 16 birdies among its five players who are counting toward the team score. The back nine of the par-71, 5,973-yard course is where things turned around for the Lopes, who are seeking their third consecutive top-five finish.
As a squad, 24 birdies were registered in round two with 14 coming on the back nine. GCU's play was led by a pair of freshmen,
Rosie Maguire and
Alexis Vakasiuola, who each finished the day at 2 under and are tied for 11th. The duo combined for 11 birdies in the second round and 21 for the day.
Vakasiuola carded back-to-back 70s while Maguire had a first-round 72 and a second-round 68.
Lopes junior
Jess Haines is just outside the top 25 at 27th place, totaling a 2 over with seven birdies. Teammate
Lena Tremouille had the biggest jump the first round to the second, moving up 32 spots after a first-round 78 was followed with a second-round 68. Tremouille is 38th with a 4-over card.
GCU freshman
Honor Johnson made the move to 51st by jumping 23 spots in the second round, finishing her day at 7 over.
The Lopes also have individual entries with freshman
Clara Duerr and sophomore
Matilda Samervong. Duerr is 49th at 6 over while Samervong is 59th at 9 over.
The team's 39 birdies rank third best in the field while GCU is fifth-best for par-3 and -4 scoring.
Final-round action begins Tuesday at 7 a.m.
