Grand Canyon freshman
Gianna Singh reached the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in the same month she will move into campus and join the Lopes program.
Singh, who is from Elk Grove, California, made the stroke-play cut after two rounds of play by shooting 2 over par at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. In a 156-player field of top qualifiers from around the world, Singh was tied for 19th place after an even-par first round of 72.
In round-of-64 match play, Singh defeated Florida Atlantic junior and American all-conference golfer Nancy Cox by when she broke a tie by winning the 18th hole.Â
That set up Singh to face 2021 NCAA individual champion Rachel Heck, a former Stanford golfer, in the round of 32. Heck was 6 up before Singh rallied on the back nine, winning hole Nos. 12, 13 and 15 to get the score to 3 up before Heck clinched 3 and 2.
Singh, who also won the San Francisco City Championship this summer, could make her Lopes debut Sept. 14-15 when GCU opens its season in Washington at the Leadership and Design Invitational.
Singh's GCU teammate, sophomore Alexis Vakasioula, also qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur but missed the stroke-play cut despite a strong 1-over second round. Vakasioula, who is from San Tan Valley, Arizona, qualified by winning the Arizona Amateur Women's Championship in July.
