GCU duo head to U.S. Women's Amateur in August; Maguire goes to Euro event
An offseason of success continued Saturday when GCU sophomore Alexis Vakasiuola won the Airzona Amateur Women's Championship at Terravita Golf and Country Club in Scottsdale. Vakasiuola, an NCAA regional qualifier as a freshman, made a 10-foot putt on the tournament's 54th hole to capture the Kachina Trophy and a corresponding expemption to the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, where she will join incoming GCU freshman Gianna Singh in competition."Getting the exemption means so much to me," Vakasiuola told azgolf.com. "USGA events are just top tier, and the best players all over the world compete. Just to be there and represent Arizona and my roots means a lot.
"It means so much. Right now I can't grasp the whole thing, but later today I'm going to be like, 'Oh my gosh, I just won it.' It's very special. I played in it last year and finished runner-up, but to get the win under my hands, it just feels great."
Singh, who won this year's San Francisco City Championship, finished sixth in the Arizona Amateur Women's Championship with Vakasiuola's older sister and former GCU golfer, Alyzzah, placing 11th.
