UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Hole by hole was the Grand Canyon mentality after Monday's first nine holes.
In a tough position at 8 over and 14th place early in the Leadership and Golf Invitational at the challenging Chambers Bay Golf Course, GCU went hole by hole and slowly but surely reached the middle of pack until a third-round climb pushed it to a second-place finish Tuesday at 4 over par.
"I'm very proud of our group," Lopes head coach
Brent Nicoson said. "They are getting better day by day and becoming closer as a team."
GCU's 3-under third round was the best of a 16-team field. USC, which finished sixth in last season's final rankings as a NCAA Championship semifinalist, won the tournament team title at 5 under par. The Lopes put pressure on all teams near the top of the leaderboard, pulling within five strokes of the lead halfway through the round.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt was instrumental in helping GCU rally, shooting rounds of 70, 70 and 74 to finish 2 under. She tied for eighth to notch her second consecutive top-10 finish to start this season.
"I challenged them to be the most competitive team in the field during the final round and use our experience of last week as a learning tool," said Nicoson. "They stuck to the game plan and stayed calm and tough on a day when they experienced a tough course set-up and varying weather conditions on a great championship layout. I am proud of our team's effort and it was a great trip for our group."
Senior and Arizona native
Alyzzah Vakasiuola finished two strokes behind Rosholt at even, tying for 11th with an even-par final round. Vakasiuola shot even over her final 36 holes of the tournament. Classmate
Anci Dy had her best round of the tournament with a 2-under Tuesday, pushing her up the leaderboard 19 spots to tie for 18th.
GCU was one of three teams, joining USC and Gonzaga, to have three players finish in the top 20 of 90 golfers.
Lopes sophomores
Brenna Preap and
Lena Tremouille each finished on a strong note. Preap had the biggest jump in the standings, rising 23 spots after a 2-under final round to tie for 22nd. Tremouille tied for 67th and got better as the rounds went on, carding a 1-over score for her best round of the tournament.
GCU sophomore
Jess Haines competed as an individual and tied for 41st at 10 over.
