FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team jumped up the leaderboard with another third-round comeback Tuesday, moving up four spots to a fourth-place finish at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic at Ptarmigan Golf and Country Club.
The top-five showing is GCU's third straight this fall, coming off a second-place outing in Washington last week and a fifth-place finish in New Mexico earlier this month. The Lopes' final score in Colorado was 2 over par with a 3-under final round, second best among the 11-team field.
"I am proud of the girls today," GCU head coach
Brent Nicoson said. "We jumped up four spots and got up to fourth place and very happy with bounce back. I know there is a lot of potential in this team, and I think we are only scratching the surface of what we can be."
UC Davis won the tournament at 11 under, followed by Cal Poly in second (12 under) and host school Colorado State in third (1 over).
GCU senior
Anci Dy entered Tuesday in the top 10 and finished in the top five, tying for third at 7 under par. Dy shot 70/68/71 over the two days and earned her best finish in a Lopes uniform this season.
"I saw a lot of improvement from last week to this week for me," Dy said. "The biggest thing was my putting, I felt a lot more confident on the greens out here, which were rolling really great, and trusting my speed and trusting my lines."
GCU graduate
Calynne Rosholt carded a 3-under score, shooting 69/71/73 and finished in a tie for 12th overall. Rosholt has landed in the top 15 at the end of each tournament this season.
Sophomore
Brenna Preap had the Lopes' biggest leap up the leaderboard Tuesday, moving 10 spots with a team-best final round of 3 under. Preap tied for 28th at 4 over.
"I'm really proud of Brenna today and how she stepped up when we needed her," Nicoson said. "Calynne and Anci continue to lead us with both having great rounds. I am proud of what we did today, but we still have a lot of work to do."
GCU senior
Alyzzah Vakasiuola shot even par Tuesday and tied for 34th at 8 over for the tournament, while sophomore
Jess Haines tied for 51st at 18 over.
"Learning from yesterday and building from our mistakes and recentering ourselves in the last round was key, and we managed to rally and fight hard in Round 3," said Dy. "We have a lot of great potential on this team and getting us on a good day, hopefully we can put three together soon."
GCU takes 11 days off before returning to action in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kansas, on Oct. 7.
