LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team concluded the two-day Marilynn Smith Invitational Tuesday with its best round of the tournament, finishing 10th place overall at the Lawrence Country Club.
GCU closed with a 10-over final round to finish at 49 over in a field that saw 12 of 13 teams shoot over par. Host school Kansas won the tournament at 6 under, followed by Missouri in second (7 over) and Kent State in third (19 over).
"It was a disappointing week for us," Lopes head coach
Brent Nicoson said. "We just didn't play well but did bounce back in the final round and played a little more like GCU golf. In this game, momentum plays a big factor, and we just couldn't overcome our poor start on the first day. This was a tough golf course, and we simply didn't handle it well but learned a lot about ourselves."
The Lopes tied for fourth-best final round among the field, only being topped by champion Kansas, runner-up Missouri and fourth-place San Francisco. GCU's third-round play has been notable all season long, making giant leaps up the leaderboard in the final round for top-five finishes at the Leadership and Golf Invitational and Ptarmigan Ram Classic. The Lopes jumped three spots after Tuesday's final round, making them one of two teams to jump of at least three spots Tuesday.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt finished best for the Lopes, tying for 19th at 6 over after a 1-under final round. Rosholt totaled 10 birdies for the tournament, four of which came Tuesday as she moved up 13 spots for the top-20 placement. She tied for Tuesday's sixth-best round among the 66-player field and has now placed in the top 20 in all four tournaments this season.
"I am happy with how Calynne bounced back to grab another top-20 finish," Nicoson said. "She's been solid all fall."
GCU sophomore
Brenna Preap tied Rosholt for most birdies on the day with four, tying for a 33rd-place finish at 11 over. Preap had nine birdies and an eagle in the tournament and shot 2 over in the third round.
Lopes senior
Anci Dy finished 42nd (14 over), followed by classmate
Alyzzah Vakasiuola in a tie for 51st (19 over) and junior
Amelia Curtis (tied 62nd, 27 over).
"We have another great opportunity coming up, so hopefully our team recovers quickly and gets right back to work to prepare for our trip to Hawaii," Nicoson said.
GCU concludes the fall slate with the three-day Rainbow Wahine Invitational, beginning Oct. 21 in Kapolei, Hawaii. The Lopes then do not compete for four months before the spring season starts in February.
