HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's golf team took fourth place Tuesday at the 14-team Bearkat Invitational behind host Sam Houston, California Baptist, and ULM.
In her final round at the Elkins Lake Country Club, GCU senior
Siripatsorn Patchana shot her second tournament round of 74 to finish tied for ninth place at 6 over par. Patchana hit four birdies in her third round to give her 11 in her 54 holes played.
Honolulu native
Lani Luafalealo, a sophomore, played her second-best round of the invitational to jump six spots and tie for 14th place. Luafaealo carded a 72 in her final round and finished the tournament at 8 over par. She bogeyed her first two holes Tuesday but played 1 under par for the final 16 holes.
GCU senior
Alexis Linam struggled in the final 18 holes with a 77 that moved her to 11 over par for 21st place. Lopes senior Payton Ferhringer tied for 26th place after shooting 5 over par on Tuesday, following a pair of 2-over-par rounds on Monday.
After having a great second round on Monday, Strole dropped to an overall tie for 39th place on Tuesday.
GCU ranks 2nd after Day 1; 4 players reach top 25
The Grand Canyon women's golf team finished the first day of the 14-team Bearkat Invitational in second place, coming within six strokes of leader and host Sam Houston State after Monday's two rounds.
Four Lopes players found a spot in the top 25 entering Tuesday's final round at Elkins Lake Country Club. Patchana shot 3 over par after rounds of 71 and 74 tied her for 14th. Patchana hit back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes of her opening round and opened her second round with two birdies as well. She totaled seven birdies in her 36 holes.
Linam is also sitting in a 14th-place tie with Patchana. Linam picked up three strokes in her second round, when she shot a 72 after her first-round 75. In both rounds, the Arizona native sank two birdies.
Luafalealo shot a team-best 70 in the opening round. Luafalealo hit three birdies in her first round and only bogeyed twice in her first 18 holes. Luafalealo slipped in the second round but is still tied at 20th.
Scoring 4 over par in both of her rounds, Fehringer tied for 22nd on Monday. Despite a 75 in both rounds, Fehringer went about it two very different ways. In the first round, she parred 14 holes, including the first seven. In the second round, she birdied four holes.
The final Lope, Strole, improved by seven strokes from her first round to her second round to help the team score. The sophomore scored a 79 in her first 18 and adjusted in her second as she scored 1 over par with a 72. Strole started off her second round with back-to-back birdies. Six holes later, she managed three birdies in a row.
GCU is back in action on Friday October 8 when they head to Highlands Ranch, Colo. for the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate.
