VERONA, Wis.
– The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed the Badger Invitational in eighth place Tuesday at the University Ridge Golf Course. As a team, the Lopes scored 31 over par in three rounds with their best combined score coming on the first day of the 12-team invitational.
The top eight teams were separated by 20 strokes with GCU finishing six back of the 12-team tournament's top half.
Lopes senior
Siripatsorn Patchana closed out the invitational tied for 14th place at 5 over par after three rounds of play. Patachana carded three birdies in her final eight holes. Fellow senior
Payton Fehringer shot 7 over par for the tournament, putting her in 27th place.
"Overall, I felt like we learned a lot from this tournament and it was a good start to the a long season," GCU head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We had our ups and downs but fought together as a group and I am very proud of the team for that. We head home with things to work on and to rest up before we head to Texas."
Senior
Alexis Linam made the biggest jump in the standings for the Lopes, as she improved 10 spots with a third round of even-par 72 to land in 31st place.
Sophomores
Lani Luafalealo and
Carly Strole ended the weekend 12 above par and tied for 33rd in the Lopes' opening event.
Patachana, Fehringer remain in top 15 after day two
After two rounds of play at the Badger Invitational, GCU is in sixth place with tournament host Wisconsin remaining in first while Old Dominion, Washington State, Notre Dame and SMU complete the top five.
The Lopes' top two players swapped order on the leaderboard after Monday's second round of play at University Ridge Golf Course. Patchana is tied for 10th after carding six birdies in an up-and-down round of 2-over-par 74. Patchana totaled six birdies with three coming on the back nine. Fehringer was in the top 15 for GCU with a tie for 14th after Monday's round of 76.
The 12-team tournament's final round will be played Tuesday.
Lopes tied for 2nd after opening round
GCU opened its fall season at the Badger Invitational on Sunday by moving into a second-place tie with SMU behind tournament host Wisconsin.
Fehringer is off to a great start, as she birdied her final two holes to tie for fourth individually at 1-under-par 71. Patchana is also in the top 10 for GCU with a tie for seventh at even-par 72.
The remaining Lopes are all in the top 25 with Strole coming in at 73 (tied for 14th) and Linam and Luafalealo at 75 (tied for 25th).
The Lopes are back in action on Monday, when they head to Huntsville, Texas, for the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invite.
