Both Grand Canyon tennis teams are heading to the city of Los Angeles for the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.
The GCU women will head to No. 4 UCLA in their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, and the men will be 14 miles to the east to take on No. 12 USC.
The Lopes women clinched the NCAA tournament bid on Sunday with a 4-0 win over New Mexico State in WAC Tournament final. The men also defeated the Aggies in their WAC final with a dramatic 4-3 win later in the day to clinch their second NCAA tournament appearance in three seasons.
The women will take on a tough UCLA team that finished the regular season 19-4 and went undefeated in Pac-12 play. The top-seeded Bruins lost in the final of the conference tournament to California but earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament with an at-large berth. The Bruins boast three nationally ranked players in singles and one ranked doubles pair. It will be the first-ever meeting between UCLA and GCU in women's tennis.
The USC men had an equally dominant year, finishing 20-6 and with a 13-1 mark at their David X. Marks Tennis Center. The Trojans won the Pac-12 Tournament with three straight 4-1 wins over Oregon, Arizona and Arizona State. USC has four nationally ranked players in singles and the No. 10 doubles pair in the country. It will be the first meeting between the Lopes and Trojans since 2016.
The women will face the Bruins on Friday at 10 a.m. (Phoenix time) and the men will play USC at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time).
