The Grand Canyon men's tennis team is back in action this weekend when they travel to Waco, Texas to matches against #26 Baylor and Omaha.
This is the second time the Lopes have faced the Bears in Waco, with Baylor winning 7-0 in the 2017 season. GCU and Omaha have met once before back in 2014 with GCU winning easily 7-0.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- RANKED TEAM AGAIN:Â GCU will once again face one of the top teams in the country this weekend, taking on their third ranked team in Baylor. The Lopes have previously matched up with No. 25 Arizona State and No. 8 Stanford this season.
Â
- WEBER LEADS:Â At the halfway mark of the season, freshman David Weber continues to lead the Lopes in singles. The Schellbach, Germany native has a 6-3 record at positions 4-6 and has shown the ability to win matches early or late in singles.
Â
- BUSY MARCH: With the month of February wrapping up with this roadtrip the calendar will turn to a busy March. The Lopes will wrap up nonconference play with a road match against New Mexico, a neutral-site contest with Denver and a home match with Boise State. GCU will also host a three team WAC cluster this year, welcoming UTRGV, Chicago State and New Mexico State to the GCU Tennis Facility March 27-29.
SCOUTING
Baylor has been a perfect 7-0 at home this season while hosting a ITA Kick-Off event this year. The Bears were ranked as high as No. 5 this season bus have since dropped to No. 26 after losing to No. 6 Wake Forest and No. 9 Columbia at the ITA Indoor National Championships last weekend.
Junior Sven Lah is ranked No. 30 in the country in singles, entering this weekend with a perfect 10-0 record at the top three positions. The Bears boast three other ranked players, Matias Soto (No. 60), Constantin Frantzen (No. 93) and Adrian Boitan (No. 123). Lah and Frantzen are also the No. 9 ranked doubles pair with a 11-0 record at No. 1.
Omaha has had a road heavy schedule, playing only two matches at home. The Mavericks are 0-4 on the road this season and dropped their opening Summit League match against North Dakota last week,
Matt Hulme leads the team with a 5-2 singles record in a rotating lineup that has seen two players play at three different singles positions this year. Hulme and Nathan Reekie are the top doubles pair with a 3-1 record at No. 1. The Mavericks have been inconsistent in doubles so far only taking the point in three matches.
