WACO, Texas — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team started the weekend with a 7-0 loss at No. 27 Baylor.
The Bears (10-3) dominated the match, winning on each singles court in straight sets and easily taking the doubles point.
In doubles, No. 1 GCU pair
Lorenzo Fucile and
Can Franke suffered their first loss of the season, dropping their match 6-3 to Constantin Frantzen and Sven Lah, the ninth-ranked pair in the country. Baylor also won 6-1 at No. 3 while
Valentin Lang and
Justin Cvitanovic were in a competitive match that was stopped at 3-4.
In singles, the Bears quickly extended their lead, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 over freshman
David Weber and 6-0, 6-0 over freshman
Julian Mueller at No. 6. Junior
Freddie Grant competed well in his singles match, losing 7-5, 6-4.
Fucile faced Lah, the No. 30 ranked player in Division I, and lost 6-4, 6-2 while Lang, at No. 2, lost to Baylor's Adrian Boitan, who is ranked No. 122.
The Lopes will look to bounce back Sunday in a neutral-site match against Omaha in Waco. The Mavericks also lost 7-0 to Baylor on Saturday.
