The Grand Canyon men's and women's tennis teams released the 2019 fall schedule on Thursday.
Each team will compete in four tournaments, beginning in September, when seniors
Lorenzo Fucile and
Emilia Occhipinti will represent GCU and the WAC at the Oracle ITA Masters. The Lopes also will host the GCU Invitational from Nov. 1-3 at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale for the sixth straight year.
In 2018, Fucile became the first Lope to compete at the annual national ITA fall tournament hosted by Pepperdine, and this year Occhipinti will join him. The pair of Italians will play from Sept. 26-29, competing individually in men's and women's 32-player singles draws along with a mixed doubles draw. Last year, Fucile won a singles match in the consolation bracket and competed with Dominique Vasile of Quinnipiac in mixed doubles.
The men's team will kick off the fall season for the fourth straight year at the Wildcat Invitational, which is hosted by Arizona. The Lopes compete at the Aztec Fall Invitational to begin October before heading to the ITA Southwest Regional from Oct. 17-20, then wrapping up the season at the GCU Invitational in November.
The women's team will begin the fall season a week later than the men, competing at the SDSU Fall Classic at San Diego State from Sept. 27-29. After competing alongside the men at the ITA Southwest Regional and the GCU Invitational, the Lopes women will wrap up their season at the CSUN Fall Invitational in Northridge, California, from Nov. 8-10.
The fall season will be important for both teams, but especially for the men who look to replace
Mathieu Rajaonah and
Lucas Grego, two of the top three players from last season. The men's team features five newcomers, including
Sasha Kovacevic ,who will see his first action with GCU after sitting out last spring upon transferring from San Diego Mesa College.
