Men tally 17 wins; women earn 16 wins

GLENDALE, Ariz.— Both Grand Canyon tennis teams had strong performances at the sixth annual GCU Invitational that took place this weekend at Paseo Racquet Center.

The hidden dual format pitted the men against Azusa Pacific and Abilene Christian while the women faced Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado.

The men were consistent all three days, picking up at least four wins each day in singles. Freshman Julian Mueller had a 3-0 outing in singles, starting the weekend with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9-7) win over Leyton Bohren of Azusa Pacific. The next day, Mueller defeated Riley Tran from Abilene Christian in straight sets followed by a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Benavides of Arizona Christian.

In doubles, the men picked up four wins on the second day, led by senior duo Lorenzo Fucile and Valentin Lang, who picked up 6-1 wins over Jesse Haas and Jacob Schnaitter of Azusa Pacfici and over teammates Freddie Grant and Mueller.

On the women's side, Celina Buhr, Ludovica Infantino and Natasha Puehse all went 2-0 in singles, while the Lopes as a team won every single match on day two.

In doubles, the Lopes picked up three wins from three pairs. Ludovica Infantino and Martina Lo Pumo won 6-4 while Celia Morel and Autum Prudhomme won 6-1 on the first day. Newcomers Jana Weiss and Natasha Puehse defeated Northern Colorado's Synclair Larson and Sandra Keta 6-3 on the second day.

This was the final fall tournament for the men and the women and both teams will await the start of the spring season in January.
