Both Grand Canyon tennis teams earned WAC Player of the Week awards on Tuesda, when junior
Emilia Occhipinti and senior
Lucas Grego were named singles players of the week and
Lorenzo Fucile and
Mathieu Rajaonah were honored as doubles players of the week.
Occhipinti, at the top position in singles, clinched the match against Drake in the deciding third set in a tiebreaker. After losing the first set and seeing GCU's 3-1 lead vanish against the Bulldogs, Occhipinti forced a tiebreaker in what became a winner-take-all third set. After trailing 6-5 to face match point, the junior from Italy rallied to win the final three points, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), and gave the Lopes a win in the home opener.
Grego won both of his singles matches over the weekend at the No. 4 position. Against UC Riverside in the season opener, the senior from France was the second player to finish, winning 6-0, 6-3 against Vignesh Subramanyan. On the road against Arizona the following day in Tucson, Grego defeated Alejandro Reguant 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, for the Lopes' only singles win of the day as they fell to the Wildcats 5-2.
Fucile and Rajaonah also enjoyed a productive weekend at the top doubles position for the men's team. The duo clinched the doubles point against the Highlanders, winning with a tiebreaker, 7-6 (6-3). In Tucson, the pair represented the second match to finish against Arizona, winning 6-2, as the Lopes went on to claim the doubles point in consecutive matches.
Both teams will be back home at the GCU Tennis Facility for four home matches, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday.
