The Grand Canyon women's golf team heads to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational this week.Â
Competition will be played at the prestigious El Tigre Golf Club, a par-72 layout of 6,085 yards.Â
The event is hosted by Iowa and participating teams include GCU, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, San Diego State, Idaho, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kennesaw State, New Mexico State and Chattanooga.
Both of the GCU coaching staff's alma matters are in the field. Head coach
Lauren Giesecke (Indiana) and assistant coach
Kelli Bowers (Washington) will be battling it out with the Lopes.
The golf course is a challenging layout, having hosted the PGA Tour's World Cup Qualifier for seven straight years, the LPGA Symetra tour for two years, the Canadian PGA Tour, the Mexican National Junior Championship and many others.Â
The course has five par-3's and five par-5's. Water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes on the course.Â
Deanna Salvatori recorded her second Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week award as she shot a tournament career-best round of 67 last week in Tucson. The round was also the best by a GCU golfer since the transition to the championship era of NCAA DI. Salvatori leads GCU with a 72.75 scoring average.
Courtney Vogel is second on the squad averaging 74.75 while
Siripatsorn Patchana averages 75.00.
After this weekend, the Lopes head to Sedona for the Red Rocks Invite at Oakcreek Country Club on March 24-25.
