The Grand Canyon women's golf team has announced its 2017-18 schedule as the Lopes begin their first season eligible for NCAA postseason action.
"We are very excited to announce this year's schedule," said head coach
Lauren Giesecke. These tournaments will give us an inside look at what it's going to be like at conference and eventually postseason play. There will be a great mix of teams from various conferences (PAC-12, Big-10 and SEC) within our 11 regular season tournament schedule. We are so blessed and excited to be traveling to a couple great locations like Hawaii and Mexico where we will play some great teams."
Coming off an impressive 2017 spring season, the Lopes aim to build off three top-five finishes, including a third-place finish in the GCU Invitational. GCU returns five student-athletes who played in the top five, and will be joined by a solid group of newcomers.
GCU tees off the fall season on Sept. 11-12 at the Hobble Creek Invitational, hosted by Utah Valley. The Lopes will also play at the Rose City Collegiate (Portland St.), Bettie Lou Evans Invitational (Kentucky), Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational (Seattle U) and the Rainbow Wahine Invitational (Hawaii).
"This year will be the first "countable" year for us and we could not be more excited to get started," said Giesecke. "With this being our first year of eligibility, our goal is to stay focused on the process. In other words, each practice, workout, and team meeting will be demanding, which will translate into our tournament play. Our culture is about enjoying the process, working hard, having fun, and being the most prepared team in the country."
The spring season includes the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course on Feb. 24-25. GCU will also play at the U of A Tournament in Tucson, the Red Rocks Invite in Sedona, the Bobcat Invite in Goodyear and the Western Athletic Conference Championship at the Legacy Golf Club in Phoenix.
In addition to the quartet of Arizona tournaments, the Lopes will also play at the Battle At The Rock, hosted by UC Riverside and the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational hosted by Iowa in Puerto Vallarta.
"The Spring season will help prepare us for conference because four out of the six events are here in Arizona," said Giesecke. "We will be playing on similar grass and weather conditions that we will see at the Conference Championship in April. Another fun aspect of our Spring tournament schedule is that since most are here in Arizona, it will bring out some larger crowds of friends and family."
