Wrestling Heads to Minnesota for Gopher Duals

PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon wrestling team will look to carry its momentum after starting the season with a win over Campbell as they travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to participate in the Gopher Duals. At the tournament, the Antelopes will face No. 17 in the country, Minnesota, South Dakota State and Virginia.

Head coach Jon Sioredas is coming off a win over Campbell to open the 2015-16 season as the Lopes were able to come away winning four of the five weight classes in the 21-16 victory. Blake Monty (149), Chayse Jackson (157), Kenny Moore (174), Austin Gaun (197), William Olivas (125) and Rafael Tovar (141) were all able to come away with victories. Monty, Moore and Tovar all came out victorious in their first appearance, representing Grand Canyon.

It will be a challenging Gopher Duals for the Lopes as they will face some of the best talent across the country. These will be the first matches of the season for the Gophers, after finishing 11-3 last season, as they sit currently No. 17 in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. Virginia also received 27 votes to crack the top-25 in the poll. The Cavaliers are coming off an impressive performance at the Clarion Open as six wrestlers claimed championships at the Open. South Dakota State is coming off an appearance at the Daktronics Open where three wrestlers made the finals in their respective classes.

The Gopher Duals will conclude the four-match road trip to start the season, before heading back to Phoenix for the home opener on Nov. 12 against Northern Colorado.
