SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Grand Canyon wrestling team opened up the weekend in California with a matchup against Cal Poly. The Lopes battled the Mustangs all throughout the match but GCU fell to Cal Poly 25-12.
GCU picked up four wins on the night over the Mustangs starting off with
Austin Gaun in the 184-pound contest. Gaun defeated Mitchell Woods in a 9-5 decision for GCU's first win and two matches later
Daniel Chaid continued his hot streak with a win over Spencer Empey. Chaid has now won his tenth straight match of the season.
Juaquin Olivas was the third win for the Lopes at 133-pounds as he went up against Jason Delacruz. Olivas was able to come away with the 4-3 decision for his second straight victory. GCU's final win of the day would come from
Uzo Owuama in the 141-pound contest as he took down Connor Pollock in an 11-9 decision.
The Lopes will now close out their weekend in California with a matchup against CSU Bakersfield.
