PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon wrestling team is back on the road for the fourth straight weekend as they head to California for the first time this season. On Saturday, GCU will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif. to take on Cal Poly. To close out the weekend, the Lopes will visit Bakersfield, Calif. to face CSU Bakersfield.
The season is quickly coming to an end as GCU has four matches left before heading to the National Collegiate Open in March.
Kenny Moore and
Daniel Chaid have been on a tear recently as the two have combined for 14 straight wins. Moore has been on a nice run in January winning his last five matches and posting a 6-2 record this month. Chaid has been a consistent force for GCU as he has not recorded a loss since November 7, 2015.
Trayton Libolt is the third GCU wrestler to reach double-digit wins this season after posting his 11
th victory in his last match against Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Right on the cusp on double-digit victories is Chaid with nine wins this season and has a 3-1 record in dual meets this year. Stepping into the lineup this month is Rafael Tovar and at 141-pounds he has made contributions this month with a 2-1 record in January.
Scouting Cal PolyThe Mustangs are 1-7 this season abut they have quality wrestlers throughout the lineup. This year they are led by Andrew Morgan who is 18-7 this season, competing in the 174-pound weight class. Cal Poly has six wrestlers with double-digit victories and in dual meets, Colt Shorts has been impressive posting a 7-1 record in the 157-pound match.
Scouting CSU BakersfieldThe Roadrunners have been impressive this season with an 8-3 record with 15 guys posting double-digit victories this year. The Mustang's top wrestler Lorenzo De La Riva has had a stellar season thus far at 157-pounds leading Cal Poly in wins this season with 23 and right behind him is Ian Nickell with 22 victories at 141-pounds.
