GCU drops tight match to SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Grand Canyon wrestling team hit the road this weekend to take on Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Lopes were able to come away with four victories against the Cougars but GCU fell to the Cougars 20-15. GCU is now 5-15 this season.

Grand Canyon couldn't have asked for a better start to the match against the Cougars as Trayton Libolt won the first match of the day. Libolt was able to get a technical fall 6:18 into the match over Joe Antonelli to give GCU the lead. The Lopes made it two wins in a row as Juaquin Olivas took down Dakota Leach in a 6-2 decision to extend GCU's lead.

Southern Illinois Edwardsville would rattle off four straight wins to take the lead but Kenny Moore would stop the bleeding for GCU as he would pick up the Lopes' third win of the day. Moore faced Connor McMahon in the 174-pound match and Moore would pull out the 9-6 decision.

In the final match of the day between GCU's Daniel Chaid and SIUE's Chris Johnson, Chaid did all he could to put GCU in a spot to win. Chaid would defeat Johnson in an 11-3 major decision but the Lopes fell to the Cougars 20-15.

Next week the Lopes will make the trip to California to take on Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield.
