The Grand Canyon University women’s golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the NCAA Championships at the very difficult Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky. The Antelopes shot a first-round total of 42-over 330, with three rounds still be completed over the next three days.
Nova Southeastern is in first after shooting a 20-over 308 on the par-72 course. Florida Southern is six strokes behind Nova, posting a 314.
Charlotte Jaengkit was the top-placed finisher for the ‘Lopes after the opening 18 holes, carding a 7-over 79 to put her in a tie for 12
th place. She finished the day with eight-consecutive pars, earning a 37 over the back nine.
Abbey Gittings of Nova Southeastern was the only player to shoot even-par today and is in first overall with her 72. Her teammate, Daniel Ortiz, is second with a 73.
GCU’s
Tiffany Hewetson and
Brittany Penny are tied for 28
th after both posted an 11-over 83. Penny shot a solid 37 for her back nine.
The second round of the 72-hole NCAA Championship will be played tomorrow on the Persimmon Ridge Golf Course. Start time for Canyon’s round two is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. (Arizona time).
