The Grand Canyon men's tennis program has soaring expectations heading into its final year of WAC competition after falling just a set short in last season's WAC Championship.
GCU third-year head coach
Derek Siddiqui has a new-look roster that will gain experience through a loaded fall season of opportunity and challenges.
The Lopes' seven-man fall roster will give each player different levels of competition and experience before the team grows to nine in the spring.
"The big word for the fall is 'development,' " Siddiqui said. "We will look to best implement that development through our tournaments and qualifiers."
Returning seniors
Jonathan Da Silva and
Paolo Rosati will make the trip to Tucson this weekend for the Wildcat Invite. Others will travel to the various ITA and ITF championship qualifiers throughout the fall season.
"We are going to see how the guys perform," Siddiqui said. "Ultimately, we will send the specific players that make the most sense for each tournament, and I am excited to see how the guys step up."
The NCAA is piloting the NCAA Singles Championship in the fall this year, meaning the qualifiers and regionals will pay off much sooner.
The ITA Regionals in Tempe, Arizona, are an exciting challenge for the team. Later that week, the WAC Tennis Invitational t takes place in Abilene, Texas, on Oct. 25-27.
With lofty goals set as a team in the spring, it will be up to a successful fall, full of development and refinement, to get this team where it wants to be. The Lopes aim to be the best team in GCU history.
