Derek Siddiqui completed his third season as GCU's men's tennis head coach in 2024-25 after being named the sixth head coach in program history in July 2022.
GCU is building in the right direction through Siddiqui's three seasons. After a 7-14 debut season, the Lopes improved to 9-13 in Siddiqui's second season and 13-11 in 2024-25.
The 2023-24 campaign resulted in GCU's most wins since 2019, and the Lopes advanced to the championship match of the WAC Tournament where they fell 4-3. GCU ended the 2023-24 season by winning six of its last eight matches.
Siddiqui's second season saw two standouts garner All-WAC honors in graduate Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore David Wekesa. Both were first-team All-WAC singles players, and together they formed a second-team All-WAC doubles team. Wekesa ended the 2023-24 season by winning his final 11 matches consecutively.
Â
Siddiqui came to GCU after four-year coaching stints at Gonzaga and TCU. He played at San Diego State and was an All-Mountain West student-athlete and top-75 player nationally.
On TCU's staff for four seasons, Siddiqui was a part of a Horned Frogs program that was in the nation's top 25 every week of his tenure. In 2022, TCU spent the entire season in the top five with seven weeks as the nation's top team.
Siddiqui was on staff for a historic run by TCU from 2020 to 2022, as the Horned Frogs posted a cumulative 57-17 record with two Big 12 regular-season titles and three straight Elite Eight appearances in the NCAA tournament.
Â
In 2022, TCU finished with 26 wins, which was tied for the most in program history. The Horned Frogs entered the NCAA tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.
Siddiqui oversaw player development in his time with the Horned Frogs while simultaneously directing junior development programs as the DFW Tennis Academy Director.
Prior to TCU, Siddiqui was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Gonzaga from 2014 to 2018. In 2018, he helped Gonzaga to its first winning season in the 20-year history of the program. While at Gonzaga, Siddiqui developed eight All-WCC honorees.
As a player, Siddiqui was an All-Mountain West player in singles and doubles. As a senior in 2013, he was ranked as the No. 71 singles player in the nation and posted an 11-8 record against a difficult slate of opponents in the No. 1 singles position. He recorded three victories over nationally ranked opponents.
His collegiate career began with two seasons at Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, where he was ranked as the top player in Southern California and No. 4 in the nation for junior colleges.
A native of Long Beach, California, Siddiqui married his wife, Mason, in December 2020.
