SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men' tennis team got back in the win column with a 5-2 win over DePaul in a neutral-site match on Saturday.
After the doubles point, the Lopes (3-9) leaned on their singles play with wins on five of the six courts to complete the comeback.
In doubles, DePaul (6-8) took a 1-0 lead with wins on the bottom two courts. GCU sophomore duo
Alfred Almasi and
Paolo Rosati lost 6-3 while senior
Wyatt Anderson and junior
Jonathan Da Silva lost 6-4. At the top court, the Lopes countered with a 6-1 win from graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa.
The Lopes began their comeback by winning the first set on four of six singles courts. Wekesa picked up a win at Court 2, taking the first set 6-4 before holding a 3-0 lead in the second when DePaul's Shourya Verma retired. Meanwhile, Da Silva and Rosati picked up straight-set wins at Courts 4 and 4 to take a 3-1 lead.
GCU wrapped up the match with a pair of three-sets wins. Sullwald won his first set 6-3 but faltered in the second set, losing 6-3. The GCU graduate prevailed in the third set, winning in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3). Meanwhile, Anderson went the distance and won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at Court 6.
The Lopes will wrap up their weekend trip against Cal Poly on Sunday at 1 p.m.
