SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up its two-match road trip with a 4-1 loss to Cal Poly on Sunday.
The Lopes (3-10) lost a close doubles point and picked up a singles win in the match.
In doubles, Cal Poly (4-4) took the 1-0 lead with wins on the bottom two courts. GCU's sophomore duo of
Alfred Almasi and
Paolo Rosati lost 6-3 at Court 2 while senior
Wyatt Anderson and
Jonathan Da Silva battled to a tiebreaker at Court 3. The GCU duo lost 7-6 (7-4) and the Mustangs clinched the point. Graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa were tied at 6-6 in their match on court one but it was left unfinished.
In singles, Cal Poly picked up its first win over Sullwald who retired at Court 1 after trailing 5-0 in the first set. Meanwhile, Wekesa picked up a point for the Lopes with a 6-3, 6-2 win at Court 3. The GCU sophomore now leads the team with a 5-4 singles record thanks to two road wins on the weekend.
Cal Poly went on to clinch the match with straight set wins over Anderson at Court 6 and Rosati at Court 5. Both Almasi and Da Silva had their matches left unfinished at Court 2 and 4 with each of them leading in their second sets.
The Lopes will be back on the road next weekend in Las Vegas with matches against Saint Mary's and host UNLV on March 16 and 17.
