LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon split its weekend trip to Las Vegas by defeating host UNLV 5-2 on Sunday.
The Lopes (4-11) picked up the doubles point for the second straight match and earned victories at the bottom four spots in the lineup to clinch the win over UNLV (6-7).
Sophomore
David Wekesa extended his winning streak at the No. 3 singles spot to three matches by winning 6-2, 3-6 and 7-5 on Sunday. The Erwitte, Germany, native improved to 6-2 at No. 3 after playing four matches at No. 2 to begin March. Wekesa's dual with UNLV's Dusan Rsovac was the only singles match to go three sets.
GCU's success continued down the lineup with two-set wins by sophomore
Alfred Almasi (No. 4), junior
Jonathan Da Silva (No. 5) and sophomore
Paolo Rosati (No. 6). Da Silva posted the most convincing decision of the afternoon, winning 6-1, 6-1.
With conference action looming, the Lopes return to Phoenix for their final nonconference match. GCU will host Dayton on Monday, March 25, at 5 p.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility.
