Grand Canyon returned to competition at GCU Tennis Facility for the first time in a month and posted an impressive 4-0 shutout victory of Dayton on Monday evening.
The Lopes (5-11) posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season and ended a seven-match win streak for Dayton (14-7).
Monday's match served as the nonconference finale for the Lopes, who turn their eyes to matches at UT Rio Grande Valley and Stephen F. Austin later this week.
GCU grabbed the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. The No. 1 doubles pairing of sophomore
David Wekesa and graduate
Gerhard Sullwald won 6-3. On Court 2, sophomore
Alfred Almasi and graduate
Pablo Carretero Salvador won 6-2.
The Lopes have won the doubles point in three straight matches.
GCU was searching for three singles wins to come away with the victory in the clinch-style match, and the Lopes got what they were looking for on the odd-numbered courts.
Junior
Jonathan Da Silva won GCU's first singles match on Court 5 by a count of 6-3, 6-2.
Sullwald claimed another win on the top court, winning 6-4, 6-1. He got his fourth win on Court 1 and lowered Dayton's Connor Bruce's record to 13-4 on the season.
Wekesa clinched the match for GCU with a win on the third court, improving to 7-2 on Court 3. Wekesa gave the Flyers' Kyle McNally his second duals loss of the season.
Dayton was leading on all three even-numbered courts when GCU clinched the match, deeming the remaining courts unifnished and wrapping up a 4-0 shutout for the Lopes.
GCU begins WAC play on Thursday at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time) at UT Rio Grande Valley.
