LAS VEGAS — Grand Canyon dropped a tightly contested match 4-3 to Saint Mary's in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon.
GCU sophomore
David Wekesa continued success at the No. 3 singles spot, beating his opponent 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 5-2 at the No. 3 singles spot on the season.
The Lopes (3-11) began the day on the right track, taking the doubles point from the Gaels (4-7). GCU won the first two doubles spots behind the No. 1 team of Wekesa and graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and the No. 2 team of sophomores
Alfred Almasi and
Paolo Rosati.
Of the six singles spots, GCU was only able to claim two. Doubles winners Wekesa and Sullwald each won their singles spots.
All four of GCU's singles losses went to three sets including a tiebreaker needed at the No. 4 spot to help decide the match.
The Lopes play UNLV on Sunday at 1 p.m.
