From start to finish, Grand Canyon senior golfer
Tommaso Zorzetto was dialed in at his home course in Phoenix this week.
Zorzetto entered the third and final round Wednesday with the GCU Invitational outright lead after shooting back-to-back rounds of 65 on Tuesday. Zorzetto kept his distance from the rest of the 93-player field, carding a final-round 68 to shoot 15 under par for the tournament and six strokes ahead of second place.
The senior from Padova, Italy, was one of three players in the field to shoot three sub-70 rounds in claiming his first collegiate medialist honor.
GCU took second place out of a field of 16 teams. The Lopes shot 23 under, one stroke back of Cal State Fullerton, which tallied a 13-under final round to take the top spot.
GCU placed higher than WAC participants California Baptist (tied for fourth) and UT Arlington (tied for seventh) and won the head-to-head matchup against No. 51 Washington State, which entered as the highest ranked team among the field.
Lopes senior
Craig Passmore finished tied for 10th in his first start of the season. Passmore had 16 birdies for the tournament and went 70/66/72 throughout the two days. Senior teammate
Nicky Kling carded an even scorecard to tie for 26th, along with freshman teammate
Antonio Bulgheroni, who competed as an individual.
Rounding out the starting five were senior
Matthew Pennington and freshman
Gavin O'Neill, who each shot 2 over to tie for 36th. Also competing as individual entries were GCU's
Warner Beach (2 over),
Josh McCabe (4 over),
Jake Lawson (7 over) and
Joseph Cardon (29 over).
The Lopes have tallied three consecutive top-three finishes, including two second-place showings in the last three outings. They resume play Monday, March 25, for the two-day Duck Invitational in Eugene, Oregon.
