TUCSON – Grand Canyon men's golf finished the second of two days of the N.I.T. at the Omni Tucson National Resort Tuesday afternoon.
GCU finished 11th out of 13 schools, carding a 1 under total with a 7 under finish in the third and final round.
No. 5 Texas edged out host school No.30 Arizona at 41 under, finishing one stroke better than the Wildcats. Iowa State came in third at 29 under.
The field included five teams ranked in the Clippd Scoreboard Rankings' Top 30 including seven in the top 75.
GCU finished second of three Mountain West schools, trailing only ninth place Wyoming by two strokes. The Mountain West Championship will be held at the Omni Tucson National Resort May 3-5.
Tuesday began with the conclusion of the second round as most teams were halted through 11 holes Monday due to darkness. The Lopes finished that second round 2 over before a single round best 7 under third and final round.
Junior
Gavin O'Neill shot a 5 under, 67 in his final round with six birdies and an eagle. The Irishman tied for 18th at 5 under overall with 13 birdies. His birdie count tied for 12th among a field of 72 golfers.
Sophomore
Matthew Diehl climbed up the leaderboard after a 4 under final round, finishing the tournament even par at tied for 42nd. Diehl matched O'Neill's birdie output over two days and finished 2 under on par 3 holes, second best among all players.
Sophomore
Nixon Lauritzen placed one spot back of Diehl at 1 over, carding a 1 under third and final round with three birdies. Freshman
Daniel Nilsson tied for 68th (9 over) and sophomore
Campbell Kerr placed 71st at 11 over par.
The Lopes look ahead to the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 12-14 in Lihue, Kaua'I, Hawaii.
